There are many programs and apps that are valuable tools for creating eye catching social media graphics and flyers. However, creating readable and accessible files is a must! This guide will walk through steps to ensure that you make the best quality files.

Accessible Infographics and Flyers

Text

  • Text must be true text that is selectable and readable by a screen reader, and not an image
  • Text must be clear and easy to understand
  • Font size must be readable (recommended no smaller than 12pt)
  • Use ALL CAPS, bold, and italic sparingly
  • Language and tone should be appropriate for your message

Structure

  • Use a clear and descriptive title (main heading)
  • Headings and subheadings must be used to organize information
  • Bullet lists should be used to organize key points
  • Number lists should be used to represent a process or steps
  • The reading order should match the visual order 

Color

  • Color contrast should meet WCAG AA standards
  • Color contrast applies to foreground and background content as well as text color and background color
  • Color cannot be the only method to distinguish information or links (i.e. "see the red section")

Links

  • Links need to be easily recognizable/underlined
  • Link text should be clear and accurately represent where it will take the reader
  • Link text and URLs should be unique per page (i.e. do not use the same URL with different linked text)
  • Do not link words or phrases such as "click here" ore "read more"
  • Link focus must be present for keyboard users to identify visually

Images

  • Images that convey important information must have alternative text
  • Alternative text must be brief and describe the image or purpose/context of the image
  • Do not use phrases such as "image of" or "picture of" in the alt text
  • If the infographic or flyer is output in a graphic format (JPG or PNG, etc.), a transcript - full text version - must be included on the page

Mobile Friendly

  • The flyer or infographic should resize appropriately when zoomed in
  • The content should not overlap with zoomed in
  • Any links should remain functional on a mobile device
  • The flyer or infographic should be readable using a mobile device screen reader (Voicover for IOS, or Talkback for Android)
